Approving better bikeway designs

All over California, communities want to build the kinds of bikeways that will attract all of their residents to bicycling, not just the hardy handful who will bike no matter what. Yet they are prevented from building the best designs because California law requires every bikeway to adhere strictly to Caltrans’ standards, and those standards are out of date and not nearly inclusive of the range of innovations being implemented around the world as more and more communities try to encourage more bicycling.

The CBC is working to allow use of the kinds of designs included in NACTO’s Urban Bikeway Design Guide, AASHTO’s design publications, or guidance from the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
